These days, evenings are heavy
with clouds that refuse to crack, to open
a window is let in the night
creatures, which flutter and tumble
into the glow of a phone
in my hand, where devastation lurks
behind every swipe. A flash
of lightning, then thunder peals
the breath from our bodies, declining
to touch. The wind
gales from the south and leaves
us stranded but not alone
in our thoughts—Weird how we can’t stop
doom in our throats or make a sound
that isn’t the opposite of rain.
