Making Noises is the second self-published novel from Melbourne author Euan Mitchell, and follows in the footsteps of his best-selling début, Feral Tracks (1998). Like Feral Tracks, Mitchell’s new book is partially inspired by his own life experiences, in particular his time spent playing in pub bands and working at Ausmusic.

Mitchell’s insider view of the music industry informs Making Noises, providing convincing verisimilitude and consistent tone. While some of his characters border on the stereotypical, his descriptions of them are deft and concise, and both their actions and the dialogue are convincing. Less successful is the rapidly paced sequence of events that forms the plot, which occasionally strains credibility; some early scenes are rather expository. Mitchell’s satirical tone lacks bite and dulls the wit and insight he displays when writing at his best. Ultimately, Making Noises suffers from the same flaw afflicting many of the bands playing live music venues night after night; it is engaging and competent, but lacks the vital spark that makes a superstar.
