A work of original slash fiction, the trilogy fits into the subgenre m/m, works of male-on-male romance, and erotica. It is a genre that is overwhelmingly written by women for women readers. Despite an abundance of sexual content, it often varies from other erotica due to a more nuanced treatment of romance, power relations, and the social underpinnings of its characters.

The trilogy started life as an online serial, where it attracted fifteen million hits. The first two self-published instalments became Amazon bestsellers on its gay and lesbian fiction list. Penguin picked up the two books and commissioned Kings Rising. They have since become bestsellers, one of the few examples of m/m fiction crossing into the mainstream.

This enthralling trilogy is rich in detail and plot, and takes the reader into a superbly rendered imagined world. Pacat rarely misses a beat in the closing book as her multifaceted characters fight to restore order to their warring kingdoms.
