Thyla is a cross between a Chalet School story and a Gothic thriller, with a romantic twist. Being the first in a series, there is much exposition, particularly in the latter half of the narrative, and Tessa’s sudden remembrances appear too convenient at times. Overall, however, the story is fast-paced and establishes an exciting premise for later books.
Tessa is a strong, often funny narrator; her self-deprecating tone is endearing. While some of the minor characters initially appear flat, there are indications that they will be developed and enlivened later in the series.
Ostensibly, Thyla is the latest addition to the overwhelming plethora of Young Adult ‘preternatural clique’ novels. However, Gordon uses the Tasmanian bush to create a fearsome backdrop for her narrative and draws on local colonial history to shape her story. For readers who enjoyed Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy (2007)and Claudia Gray’s Evernight (2008), Thyla adds an Australian flavour to what is a predominantly American genre.
